Human Resources professionals are the backbone of any organization. It is a position that requires us to wear many different hats as we manage employee relations, benefits, workplace culture, and more. Even though this is what we enjoy and are passionate about, it can be quite demanding and stressful which can lead to burnout amongst HR professionals. It is a tough task to manage your own self-care when you are helping so many employees and feel responsible for them as well. However, it is crucial for those within HR to take care of themselves to prevent burnout, so they can continue to provide their best for employees. This blog will dive into practical self-care strategies for your professional and personal life.
1. Set Boundaries & Take Breaks
One of the best ways to take care of yourself is by setting boundaries in the workplace. Creating boundaries in the workplace is easier than it seems. It can be as simple as blocking off your lunch in your calendar so meetings cannot be booked during that time.
Another method for setting boundaries is establishing your work hours. Make sure you are clearly defining your work hours and stick to them. Avoid checking emails or taking work calls outside these hours unless it’s an emergency.
Lastly, make sure you are taking breaks throughout the day as needed. We are human and no one is capable of working eight straight hours, so make sure you take your lunches and your breaks to reset and come back to your tasks with a clear mind. These are nice and easy ways to take care of yourself in the workplace.
2. Physical Health
When many discuss self-care, mental health is the first thing that is usually brought up, however, physical health is just as important and has a major impact on ones mental health.
Exercising is great for both your physical and mental health. I know I am able to think more clearly and be more creative after a good run. It doesn’t have to be an overly strenuous activity, it can be a leisurely walk at lunch or a relaxing yoga class after work. Whatever you choose, it is well known that exercising will help you in all aspects.
Also, do not underestimate the impact of a good night sleep. Your brain and body need to be refreshed for the next day so your can put your best foot forward. Therefore, don’t forget to get your eight hours of sleep.
3. Mental Health
Constantly dealing with employee issues, managing conflicts, and ensuring compliance can take a toll on mental health. Regular self-care practices can help manage stress and prevent burnout.
Incorporating mindfulness and relaxation practices into your daily routine can significantly reduce stress and improve overall well-being. These practices can include meditation and deep-breathing exercises. Journaling and practicing gratitude daily are also great techniques to assist with self-care.
4. Networking
This may not be you first thought when you think of self-care, but here me out. As someone who used to shy away from networking, I learned how helpful it is to connect with other professionals in your industry. These connections will help you understand that you are not alone in many of the difficulties you face at work.
Connecting with others allows you to gain new insights, make friends with those in your professional field, and can help you come out rejuvenated to tackle those work problems.
I am a bit more introverted and enjoy time to myself to recharge, but I have found that networking with like minded people can give me more of the spark that I need rather than sitting at home and binging the new season of Love is Blind.
5. Celebrate Your Wins
Sometimes it is easy to get bogged down when something we implement at work does not go our way or our workload becomes too much. It is important during these times to acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. This can help boost your morale and motivation, which will allow you to trudge through difficult times at work.
A great way to celebrate is by keeping a success journal. Use this journal to write down your accomplishments and the positive feedback you receive. Reflecting on these can be a great morale booster, not to mention, this comes in handy for interviews and when it comes to asking for that raise.
Lastly, make sure to treat yourself a long the way for any significant wins and even the smaller wins. This can be buying yourself a nice treat, taking a day off, or giving yourself the evening to relax. Treating yourself can be different for everyone, so find what feels good for you!
Remember, taking care of yourself is the first step towards taking care of others. So, start today and make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Your mind, body, and career will thank you.
